Creative Challenge:
John Hopkins University Instrument Development Group (who work on the James Webb telescope) had created a new spectrograph for the Southern Astronomical Research (SOAR) Telescope to analyse individual stars in galaxy clusters from land based telescopes, specifically the SOAR Telescope inCerro Pachón – IV Región – Chile and needed a scientifically meaningful logo for the promotion of their mirror array spectrograph.
Creative Strategy:
We wanted to firstly understand what this spectrograph did, and set about visualising what made this spectrograph different from others. What we learned was that the instrument was able to identify and clarify single points of light in a galaxy cluster for the purposes of finer analysis by astronomers. We decided to create a logo that spoke to scientists in a way that they would understand at a deeper level whilst presenting clean sharp typography supporting the accuracy of the new instrument.
Client reaction:
“Perfect, it’s just what we need to promote our Soar Adaptive Module Optical Spectrograph to the astronomers at SOAR.”
